Armed Suspect On The Run After Hit & Run
(Titusville, FL) -- A search is underway for an armed man believed to be involved in two hit-and-runs in Brevard County. Titusville police say the man was last seen running, while holding a rifle, on Garden Street yesterday afternoon. He was allegedly involved in two crashes near Broad Street and Washington Avenue before he fled on foot. Inside his car, police say they found body armor.
GoFundMe Page For OPD Officer Taken Down
(Orlando, FL) -- A police officer facing charges won't be able to use a popular website to cover his legal costs. GoFundMe yesterday took down a page dedicated to Orlando Police Officer Anthony Wongshue. He's accused of manslaughter for an on-duty shooting death last year, and the local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge started the GoFundMe page to lift his family's financial burden. The page raised more than three-thousand dollars in less than an hour, but GoFundMe tells the Orlando Sentinel they took it down for violating their terms and conditions.
Teacher Arrested For Bringing Weapons To School
(Seminole, FL) -- A teacher is facing charges for bringing weapons to a Pinellas County school. Starkey Elementary School teacher Betty Jo Soto was arrested yesterday after school police say she was found with loaded guns and knives in her classroom. The principal notified police when he saw Soto walking around with a backpack, which he thought was unusual. The fourth-grade teacher has a concealed weapons permit, but she's not allowed to have guns on campus.
Fewer Florida Kids Ready For Kindergarten
(Undated) -- More Florida children are unprepared for kindergarten, according to the State Department of Education. Their research shows about 42 percent of the children who attended the state's voluntary pre-kindergarten program in 2018 were not ready for school. And that's six percent worse than the year before.
SpaceX Targets Thursday For Next Launch
(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- SpaceX is now targeting Thursday for its next launch. The mission to send dozens of Internet satellites into orbit was scrubbed twice last week. Upper level winds forced them to cancel Wednesday's planned liftoff from Cape Canaveral. The launch was postponed again Thursday night, due to software issues.
Eiffel Tower Climber In Custody
(Paris) -- A man who climbed the upper part of the Eiffel Tower Monday is in custody. The Paris landmark was shut down as rescue crews tried to recover the man. He appeared to be calmly clinging to the steel beams just under the tower's top observation deck with only his hands to keep him from certain death. Firefighters talked him into giving himself up, and he's now in police custody.
Dad Sentenced For Stealing Girl Scout Money
(Forest Grove, OR) -- An Oregon dad will serve 18 months of probation and 80 hours of community service after stealing his daughter's Girl Scout cookie money. Court officials say 40-year-old Brian Couture, of Forest Grove, stole 700-dollars' worth of the girl's cookie proceeds and reported that someone had broken into the home and stole it. Police interrogated the man until he admitted to taking the money for an erotic massage. Couture also has to pay restitution to the Girl Scout organization.
