UCF Board Accepts Whittaker's Resignation

(Orlando, FL) -- After just eight months the Dale Whittaker era is over at UCF. The school's board of trustees voted yesterday to accept Whittaker's offer to resign as president. The board also named Thad Seymour as acting president. Seymour is vice president for partnerships and Chief Innovation Officer.

After the Board of Trustees voted to accept Dale Whittaker's resignation yesterday, documents were released of testimony UCF employees gave to state lawmakers. The employees claim Whittaker was more aware than he admits that the school was improperly spending millions on construction costs. CFO Bill Merck, who resigned when the issue first came to light last year, told lawmakers he believes the board blamed him to protect Whittaker.

Successful Rocket Launch Reported

(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- SpaceX is celebrating a successful and historic rocket launch. A Falcon 9 blasted off from Cape Canaveral at quarter-of-nine last night carrying a communications satellite and lunar lander. An Israeli nonprofit is behind the launch, and it's the first privately-funded lunar lander mission ever. The lander's trip to the moon is expected to take about two months, and if it's successful, it will be the first lunar landing ever for Israel.

State Senator Asks Governor To Send In National Guard, FHP To Jacksonville

(Jacksonville, FL) -- No word yet from Governor Ron DeSantis on whether he will send in the National Guard and the FHP to help patrol the streets of Jacksonville. In a letter sent to Tallahassee yesterday, Sixth District State Senator Audrey Gibson made the request to help fight the gun violence plaguing the community. So far this year there have been nearly two dozen murders in the River City.

OFD Chief Resigns Over Sexual Harassment Claims

(Orlando, FL) -- Orlando's fire chief is stepping down after a federal investigation into sexual harassment claims. Roderick Williams resigned yesterday after the EEOC found he sexually harassed the assistant fire chief and demoted her as punishment for accusing him. Williams denies the allegations, but he wrote in his resignation letter he doesn't want to be a distraction. The federal report also blamed two deputy chiefs, but there's no word on their job status.

Mayor Arrested For Shooting At Deputies

(Port Richey, FL) -- A Tampa Bay mayor is accused of shooting at Pasco County deputies. Port Richey Mayor Dale Massad was arrested yesterday at his home on Hayward Lane. Deputies say he fired at them when they arrived to serve a warrant. Massad was wanted for practicing medicine without a license, but now, he's also charged with attempted murder.

City of Tampa Mayor's Twitter Account Hacked, Bomb Threat Made

(Tampa, FL) -- Offensive material is now gone from the Twitter account of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. He is out of town on a hunting trip, and was alerted to the hack by police. The hackers posted a threat to Tampa International Airport, and tweeted out a barrage of racist and pornographic comments.

Tooth Fairy Is Getting Less Generous

(Oak Brook, IL) -- The Tooth Fairy seems to be tightening her purse strings a bit. According to a new Delta Dental Original Tooth Fairy Poll, the average monetary payout for a lost tooth last year was down 43-cents from the year before. The Tooth Fairy's average cash gift dropped to three-seventy per tooth. A first lost tooth, though, tends to bring in more cash. That monumental event brings in an average of four-dollars-96-cents.

TODAY IN HISTORY:
