Cuban Earthquake Felt In Central Florida
(Orlando, FL) -- Some people in Central Florida say they felt tremors from an earthquake in Cuba. The 6-point-one quake hit around 2:00 yesterday afternoon off Cuba's coast. Some felt it at Disney World, and some attractions were temporarily closed. No injuries were reported locally.
Nassau County Approves Data Center Moratorium
(Fernandina Beach, FL)-- Nassau County is taking a stand against data centers. The county commission voted yesterday to impose a one-year ban on the facilities. This will give the county time to study the impact the centers have on resources, like water, land and electricity. Meanwhile, a fact-finding committee is planning to meet today at 5:00 p.m. at West Nassau High School in Callahan.
Osceola County Restaurant Evacuated Over Suspicious Backpack
(Kissimmee, FL)-- A backpack and an alarming note are responsible for a brief scare in Osceola County. The sheriff's office announced last night the Piocos Chicken restaurant on Boggy Creek Road was evacuated after a backpack was left unattended. An employee tells WESH 2 a note on the backpack read, in Spanish, "don't touch, bomb." Deputies say someone called 911, and everyone left the restaurant as the Orange County Bomb Squad responded. They found nothing harmful in the backpack, and the building was cleared. The OCSO says the backpack's owner returned to the restaurant and was interviewed by deputies and ATF agents.
Broward County Woman Disputes Huge Water Bill
(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- A Broward County woman is fighting her city over an unusually large water bill. Fort Lauderdale's Gisel Valdivia got a bill three months ago for over 32-thousand dollars.The city says that was due to a leak of over a million gallons that started in January and lasted for two months.Valdivia found the leak and had it fixed, but the city sent a second bill for another 30-thousand dollars for more water that leaked before the repairs were done. The city gave her a 30-thousand dollar credit, but the city's finance director says she can't wipe out the entire bill because the water actually left the system. Valdivia tells NBC 6 she's disputing the charges, and she refuses to do a payment plan because that is ridiculous.
World Cup Referee Denied Entry At MIA
(Miami, FL) -- A soccer referee who was set to work the World Cup can't get into the US.Somalia's Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry Saturday when he arrived at Miami International Airport from Turkey. A spokesman for Customs and Border Protection says Artan was considered inadmissible after additional screening revealed vetting concerns. No details were provided. Artan doesn't seem bitter. He says he's in a positive mood, and he's focused on the next challenges in his career.
