Deadly Shooting In Volusia County
(Daytona Beach, FL) -- A man is dead after a shooting in Volusia County. It happened yesterday morning in Daytona Beach at Derbyshire Park. Daytona Beach Police say a man and a woman were in a car when a man they didn't know approached with a gun. The man in the car grabbed his own gun, and the other man started walking away. At one point, though, police say he turned around, fired at the car and hit the man inside. He returned fire and then drove to the hospital. The DBPD says the other man was found dead.
Tampa Police Officer Arrested
(Tampa, FL) -- A Tampa police officer finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Officer James Brown was arrested yesterday morning for excessive speeding. Tampa Police say he was going over a hundred miles an hour on I-75 near Big Bend Road. Brown was off-duty at the time. Police Chief Lee Bercaw says he's deeply disappointed, and Brown's conduct fell short of his expectation that officers lead by example. Brown was placed on administrative leave.
HillsCo Deputy Arrested For DUI
(Tampa, FL) -- A Hillsborough County deputy is accused of driving under the influence. The sheriff's office announced yesterday Richard Michael Garcia was arrested Saturday night. Deputies say he showed signs of impairment during a traffic stop in Citrus Park near Gunn Highway and Normandie Road. Garcia is charged with DUI and refusal to submit to testing. He's now on unpaid leave pending an internal investigation. Garcia has been with the HCSO since 2020.
Google Wants To Release Millions Of Mosquitoes In CA And FL
(Mountain View, CA) --Google is requesting approval from the federal government to release up to 32 million mosquitoes in California and Florida as part pf its "Debug" program. The initiative looks to "stop bad bugs with good bugs" by releasing hordes of sterile mosquitoes to eliminate ones that carry disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says mosquitoes are the deadliest animal in the world. Google scientists say their eradication approach uses data analytics, sensors and automation to "scale the sterile insect technique." A notice from the Federal Register shows the Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing Google's Experimental Use Permit applications under federal guidelines.
