DeSantis Announces Special Session

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Governor DeSantis is calling for a special session next week on property tax relief.At a news conference in Tampa today, he said, "Taxing something that you own repeatedly. is the worst way to do taxation." DeSantis wants to raise the exemption to 250-thousand dollars. Right now, most Florida homeowners get up to 50-thousand exempted from their home's taxable value. Even if lawmakers pass the governor's proposal, it still must go before Florida voters in November.

Oviedo Mayor Worried About Proposal To Eliminate Property Taxes

(Oviedo, FL) -- Eliminating property taxes may not add up for Seminole County residents. Oviedo Mayor Megan Sladek [[SLAY-deck]] talked yesterday after Governor Ron DeSantis called for a special session next week to abolish property taxes. This comes as Oviedo officials want to expand the police station. Sladek wonders how the city could afford to pay the operational costs without property tax revenue. She tells News 6 it's hard to make a plan when there's no guaranteed way to consistently fund it. This echoes what other local officials around the state are claiming.

UPDATE: FL Teen Able To Remain Out Of Jail

(Miami, FL) -- The teen who's accused of killing his stepsister during a Caribbean Carnival Cruise can remain on house arrest. A federal judge in Miami ruled the 16-year-old can continue to live with a family member as long as he wears a GPS tracker. He's facing federal charges of murder and aggravated sexual abuse in the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner. The government is pushing for the boy to be locked up immediately. His trial is set to begin in early September.  

Off-Duty Police Officer Involved In Shooting In Miami-Dade County

(Miami Beach, FL)-- One person is hurt after a shooting involving an off-duty police officer in Miami-Dade County. It happened yesterday morning in Miami Beach at South Pointe Park. Miami Beach Police say the unidentified person who was shot was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. South Florida Police Benevolent Association President Steadman Stahl says the officer was attacked while walking home with his family. He tells Local 10 News the officer shot the suspect in self-defense. No charges have been announced, and the FDLE is investigating.

A Personalized License Plate Being Recalled, Seen As Threat To President

(Trenton, NJ) -- The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is planning to recall a license plate, because it is seen as a threat to President Trump. A picture of a Subaru Outback's license plate "FDT 8647" was posted Wednesday on social media sites, and Trump supporters complained after interpreting it as a call to kill the 47th President. Officials say they are contacting the vehicle owner to replace it, and say the owner will have 15 days to return it. The plate is similar to what former FBI head and former New Jersey resident James Comey is accused of making.

Meowing Police Car Mystery Solved

(Elsmere, DE) -- Police in Delaware say they've solved what has become known as the "Mystery of the Meowing Police Car." Officers in Elsmere say they ocassionally had heard the meowing from the vehicle periodically over two shifts. Firefighters looked underneath the vehicle and found a kitten hiding in the frame. It was safely rescued and adopted by a police officer who named it "Felony."
