DeSantis Confirms Alligator Alcatraz Will Shut Down

(Titusville, FL) -- Governor Ron DeSantis confirms Alligator Alcatraz will soon close. He made the remarks Wednesday during a press event Titusville. DeSantis said the immigrant detention facility was never meant to be permanent.It opened last summer in the Everglades to help kept violent criminal illegal aliens off the streets. A Miami news outlet reports the state Department of Emergency Management notified vendors the facility is shutting down and that roughly 14-hundred detainees will be removed in the coming weeks.  

DeSantis Criticizes House Speaker Perez

(Madison, FL) -- Governor Ron DeSantis is not happy with a South Florida Republican. DeSantis criticized Miami State Rep. and House Speaker Daniel Perez yesterday for refusing to support two measures DeSantis pushed for. DeSantis wanted the House to pass bills that would expand vaccine exemptions for kids and impose regulations on artificial intelligence. Neither bill was introduced in the House, and the House has also not provided funds for cancer research and food testing. Those are two causes that are a priority for First Lady Casey DeSantis. Governor DeSantis says Perez has a personal agenda, and he's not governing in the best interests of the people of Florida.

Seminole County Student Arrested For Having Gun On Campus

(Sanford, FL) -- A Seminole County student is facing criminal charges. Sanford Police arrested Seminole High School student Tyheme Wyche for allegedly having a gun on campus. The SPD says another student reported that Wyche had a gun. Wyche was found hiding in a closet, and officers say the gun was close by. He was arrested without incident, and no one was hurt. Police Chief Cecil Smith praised the student who came forward for being brave and taking swift action. 

Escambia County Tries To Boost School Enrollment

(Pensacola, FL)-- Escambia County Public Schools is taking steps to boost enrollment.Officials estimate enrollment has dropped 10 percent in less than a decade. In response, the district is offering new classes, like cybersecurity and nutrition. School board member David Williams says they're trying to offer a variety of things to students to appeal to their interests. Some parents may be tough to win over, though. Kyra Herndon has home-schooled her kids for three years, and she tells WEAR News they cover so much more now than they did when they were sitting in classrooms for almost 8 hours a day.        

Winning Ticket Found Eight Days Before Expiring

(Trenton, NJ) -- A Pick Six New Jersey Lottery ticket worth five-point-nine-million dollars was eight days away from being worthless, before a man says he found it crumpled up in one of his pants pockets. State lottery officials say the man showed up to their offices Thursday with the winning ticket, and explained he heard their announcement last month about the unclaimed ticket sold at the Exxon in Roseland where he buys lottery tickets.The lucky guy told lottery officials he checked every corner in every room, as well as every pocket on every pair of pants, until his fingers felt a crumpled piece of paper in one. He bought that verified, two dollar ticket now worth five-point-nine-million dollars to the state lottery offices on Thursday May 14th, before it was due to expire on the 22nd.
