Orange County Public Schools Offers Reassurance After Cyber Attack

(Orlando, FL) -- An education software platform that was attacked by hackers is back online and safe to use. That's what Orange County Public Schools said yesterday about the cyber attack on Canvas.That's the program Orange County and thousands of other school districts around the world use. The data Canvas stores was accessed by hackers, but the company that owns Canvas says it reached a deal with the hackers, and the data has been returned. OCPS says students, staff and parents can now safely access Canvas, and they'll continue to monitor system performance.   

State Lawmaker Rejects Using State Funds For New Rays Stadium

(Tallahassee, FL)-- The Tampa Bay Rays' new stadium may face obstacles in Tallahassee.Clearwater State Senator Ed Hooper said yesterday he doesn't want to dedicate state funds to the project until Hillsborough County and Tampa do so. The Rays are asking the county and the city for a billion dollars, and they also want 150 million from the state. Rays CEO Ken Babby has told Tampa officials he wants local funding secured by the end of the month.    

Local Cuban-Americans Worried About New Travel Policy

(Coconut Grove, FL)-- Some Cuban-Americans are worried about a travel policy going into effect this year. Cuban officials announced last month any American from Cuba must use their Cuban passport to enter Cuba. Also, while in Cuba, they must not rely on their American citizenship for any legal or consular services. The policy will go into effect in November, and it'll apply to people like Miami-Dade County's Reinier Gutierrez. He's considering buying land in Cuba, and he thinks the policy is a desperate money grab by the Cuban government. Andy Gomez would also be affected by the policy, and he tells CBS News Miami the loss of US consular protection would make him hesitate before entering Cuba.

Florida Allows Cash Purchases To Round To Nearest Nickel

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Paying with cash in Florida will look a little different at the checkout.Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill allowing businesses to round certain cash purchases to the nearest nickel.The move comes after the U.S. Mint stopped producing pennies for circulation. Totals ending in one or two cents will be rounded down, while amounts ending in eight or nine cents will be rounded up. The change applies only to cash, while credit cards and other digital payments will still be charged to the exact penny.
