A Tennessee mom revealed that she's allowing her 16-year-old daughter changed her birth name, Dixie, after bullying from her classmates, who accused her of "racism" and supporting the confederacy.

Danielle Remp, 35, shared a TikTok claiming her "daughter hates her name because she gets made run of for it," adding that the she said "yes no questions asked" when her daughter "asked me if we could change her name."

“They call me things like ‘Dixie Dust,’ or ‘Dixie Normous,’” said Dixie, who now goes by Skye, via TODAY. “They just give it all sorts of crude meanings, and they’ll call me that in the hallway.”

The teenager said her father picked her name when she was born in 2008, but her mother preferred the name Skye, which she said now feels more "like me."

Dixie was a nickname for the South and the song with the same title became the Confederacy's unofficial anthem in the 19th century. The word has sparked controversy in recent years given the confederate South's pro-slavery past, which included the country trio formerly known as 'The Dixie Chicks' dropping it from their name, going by 'The Chicks' since 2020.

Remp, who works at Burger King, said she's saving up $200 to pay for the expenses to legally change her daughter's name.

“She’s a good kid,” Remp said via TODAY. “She’s doing great in school, she doesn’t give me trouble. So if changing her name makes her feel better about herself, why would I say no?”
