Smuggled Spider Monkey To Find Home At Brevard Zoo

(Viera, FL) -- Researchers from Florida Tech believe they've found the perfect mom for a wild animal in need of a new home. The Brevard Zoo tomorrow will take possession of a spider monkey found hidden in a truck that tried to cross into the U.S. from Mexico three months ago as part of the illegal exotic pet trade. The zoo has a female spider monkey named Shelly that's already caring for a baby, and two FIT students spent yesterday studying Shelly to see if she could adequately care for the seven-month-old. Darby Proctor is a spider monkey expert with the Florida Institute of Technology, and she tells Florida Today Shelly is a good choice because she's an alpha female who has always been really gentle with infants.
