HOW BREVARD HELPED CREATE A COP KILLER

During Thursday’s 8am hour Florida Today’s John Torres and I were discussing the Brevard connection to the St. Louis killing of a police officer. The suspect in the case lived and committed crimes in Brevard. In fact, he was a convicted felon.

After the man was arrested for committing a sexual assault his vehicle was searched pursuant to search warrant. The vehicle was found to contain seven firearms. As a convicted felon, the man was prohibited from firearms possession. How was a personal recognizance bond allowed for this felon with firearms?

As John and I discussed that question Brevard Public Defender Blaise Trettis called the show with an explanation. It seems that the State Attorney’s Office had not filed charges within the required forty days and the judge in the case had no choice. That prompted questions and John’s subsequent investigation is detailed here:

HOW BREVARD HELPED CREATE A COP KILLER

We depend on the elected and appointed office holders in law enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office to arrest these folks and keep them off the street. While shifting blame is common among politicians, this is a responsibility of the offices held and in this case the failure led to the death of police officer in St. Louis.

We have to do better than this!
