I hope the discussion last Friday at the Downtown Melbourne Advisory Committee is not an indication that Downtown has become San Francisco-East.The discussion is about placing high dollar porta-potties in the business district.
What’s making this necessary?Are we seeing poo and needles in the streets of Downtown Melbourne?If we are, is Melbourne PD not doing the job?That would seem to be easy enough to fix.
Yet the homeless problem has plagued businesses in or near the area for years.If it’s progressed that far, we have a serious problem. It will take more than cops to stop it.It will take cooperative efforts by merchants and various city departments to stop the illegal behavior rather than show tolerance of it.
Tolerance would indicate approval and downtown public toilets, portable ones costing well over $100,000 at that, would only add to the problem.
