Ron Burgundy Would Never Give A-Rod Advice

On this episode of The Ron Burgundy Podcast, the legendary Ron Burgundy and his producer, Carolina Barlow, were excited to sit down with Major League legend Alex Rodriguez, but maybe not as thrilled as A-Rod himself was: “When I asked him, he was so excited to be on our podcast,” Ron said. “It was beautiful, it was a beautiful thing. He was laughing out of disbelief, just like a young child, and I think he was in some sort of dream state.” That makes sense, since Ron has interviewed several renowned guests like Peter Dinklage, the San Diego Chicken, and Deepak Chopra. In this interview, Ron promised to ask the hard questions, like “Hey, A-Rod, what's it like to play baseball in front of a bunch of people?" and, "Hey, A-Rod, when the bat hits the ball and it goes, "crack," you must really love that?" (“I cannot wait to hear his answer to that one,” Ron said.)

Even though they “talk once or twice a week,” Ron said he would never give A-Rod, or anyone, advice. “Listen to me, Carolina... it's a setup. They’re tricking you, they’re trying to trick you,” Ron advised. “They are just setting you up for you to tell them things like, ‘Yes, Roger, I think you should invest your savings in a button factory, because you're right, nobody makes cool buttons anymore. And yes, they're in so many pieces of clothing.’ And then flash forward to three years later…you find Roger in a tunnel under the 405.”

Disaster struck when a bee invaded the studio, terrifying Ron and exasperating Carolina, who thought Ron was being overly dramatic. Ron disagreed, saying, “Are you packing? Take out your revolver.” Carolina pointed out that Ron hated guns, to which Ron retorted, “I hate bees!”

“If I don’t make it, will you tell A-Rod ‘what’s up’ from me?” Ron asked Carolina. “That’s how athletes talk to each other.”

When it became clear that A-Rod was running late for the interview, Ron and Carolina decided to talk with L.A. restaurateurs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo.

Originally from Florida, Jon and Vinny both agreed that the fish and chips at Epcot Center are “worth having” and that there’s no such thing as a bad corndog. They talked about all the things that are worse than hair that can be found in your food at restaurants and what the “finders, keepers” policy is on any jewelry found in sauces. Speaking of sauce, they also spent some time learning how to make a tasty tomato sauce. “It’s the mother sauce of Jon & Vinny's Restaurant,” Jon said. “We use it for braising the meatballs, we use it in making our different kinds of tomato sauces that we use at the restaurant.” “But you would never pour it into a glass, straight from the pan, and drink it like a milkshake?” Ron asked, puzzled. Jon admitted that he was often tempted.

Find out how to make this delicious sauce, what Jon and Vinny think about Florida’s “no shirt, no shoes, no problem” policy, and if A-Rod ever answers those hard-hitting questions, on this episode of The Ron Burgundy Podcast.
