Suspect Accused Of Shooting Cop In Front Of Mississippi Precinct Arrested

Authorities in Mississippi have arrested the suspect accused of killing Officer Robert McKeithen outside of the Biloxi police headquarters on Sunday (May 5) night. 19-year-old Darian Tawan Atkinson was taken into custody in Wiggins, which is about 40 miles north of Biloxi, after another officer recognized him as he was driving home following his shift.

Atkinson was charged with capital murder while his 21-year-old brother was also taken into custody on charges of accessory after the fact.

Atkinson's arrest ends a massive manhunt following the brazen attack on Sunday night. Police say Atkinson ambushed Officer McKeithen in the parking lot and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene. McKeithen was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Biloxi Police Chief John Miller praised the 58-year-old Air Force veteran saying that "he treated people with respect and dignity and we are going to miss him sorely."

Atkinson smirked as was brought into the Wiggins police department while a line of somber looking local, state and federal officers stood by.

Authorities are still trying to determine Atkinson's motive for the brazen murder.
