The plane was forced to land due to engine trouble yesterday. The pilot was stuck in the plane upside down and had to be cut out while his 89-year-old passenger crawled out of the window. The passenger was celebrating his birthday and the plane ride was his present.
Surfer Critical After Being Pulled From Water In New Smyrna Beach (New Smyrna Beach, FL) -- A surfer is in critical condition. The 43-year-old man was pulled from the water in New Smyrna Beach yesterday morning. The man was seen struggling in the water before an off-duty lifeguard pulled him to shore where CPR was performed until paramedics arrived. More than 70 people were rescued from Volusia County beaches by lifeguards yesterday.
Man's Body Pulled From Pond Behind Hotel Near UCF (Orlando, FL) -- The Orange County Sheriff's Office is investigating the discovery of a body in a pond behind a hotel near UCF. The body of 18-year-old Adrian Diaz was found in a pond behind the Intown Suites on University Boulevard yesterday morning. Authorities say they don't suspect foul play in Diaz's death. The medical examiner is helping out with the investigation.
Gainesville Man Arrested For Deliberately Ramming Vehicle (Gainesville, FL) -- A Gainesville man is accused of deliberately ramming his car into another vehicle. Victor Cartrail Valentine was arrested Saturday. Investigators say Valentine's ex-wife was a passenger in the other vehicle that he hit. No injuries were reported.
People In England Naming Children After Game Of Thrones Characters (England) -- More and more people in England are naming their kids after characters from Game of Thrones. A new report from the BBC says 343 newborn girls were named Arya in 2017, a 14 percent jump from 2016. Seventy-three babies were named Khaleesi, and eleven named Tyrion. Star Wars characters were also a popular pick last year, with 149 baby girls named after Princess Leia. Seventy boys were named Kylo, and 21 named Rey. Seven girls born in England last year were also named after Disney's newest princess, Moana.
Maine Restaurant Under Investigation For Using Marijuana To Sedate Lobsters (Seawall, ME) -- A seafood restaurant in Maine is under investigation for using marijuana to put lobsters at ease before cooking them. Customers at Charlotte's Legendary Lobster Point in Seawall can request to have their lobster sedated with the drug when they order it. The sea creature is then placed in a box with some water, and marijuana smoke is blown inside to help calm them down. The state health department is currently looking into what effects the drug will have on the lobster's health. The restaurant has stopped using the sedation method because of the investigation, but the owner says she is confident they'll be able to resume soon.
Man Accused Of Stealing Motorcycle (Hartford, CT) -- Charges are being filed against a Connecticut man accused of trying to sell a stolen motorcycle back to its owner. Police in Hartford say Raekwon Acosta was in possession of it and using an online app to unload it to a prospective buyer. He had no idea the man he communicated with through an app was the actual owner, who quickly called police. The bike was stolen in July and Acosta was arrested late last week. He's facing charges that include larceny and interfering with police.
