Brevard’s Tourism Development Council is scared and that, my friends, is a good thing.

As part of a larger tax bill the legislature passed Randy Fine’s former stand-alone TDC tax use measure as an amendment.  The bill allows for flexibility in the use of Tourism Tax dollars for infrastructure and other uses that impact tourism.

Flexibility is an option created by this act, not a mandate.  So, why would the TDC oppose it?  My thinking is that they fear additional scrutiny over how those tax dollars are and have been spent historically.

Billboards to nowhere, TV ads in Tampa to come to our (less tourist friendly) beaches and a $67k statue in Melbourne Beach are just the highlights.

More options should mean more scrutiny and the bad practices of the past should be turned into positives for Brevard and its tourists.

It’s a shame the TDC just doesn’t see that.  It’s funny what greed will do to you.
