Sheriff Wants To Arm Volunteers (Titusville, FL) -- Brevard County's sheriff has an idea he says, in his heart, is the best way to protect students. Wayne Ivey yesterday announced a new program called STOMP that would allow some school personnel to be armed. The program calls for volunteers to go through training by the sheriff's office to patrol the schools, like an air marshal on a plane. Broward County To Look At Gun Laws (Fort Lauderdale, FL) -- Broward County doesn't want to wait for Washington or Tallahassee to implement gun reform. The county commission today will discuss what it can do to pass new gun restrictions. State law says communities that try to override state gun laws can be fined five-thousand dollars, and it also gives the governor the power to remove an elected official who violates the law. The "Miami Herald' reports commissioners this morning are also expected to discuss studying how the response to the shooting could have been better. BROWARD NEEDS TO LOOK AT THOSE SOLUTIONS RATHER THAN PLAYING WITH GUN LAW.
Scott Resists Call To Fire Broward County Sheriff (Washington, DC) -- While others are calling for action against the Broward County sheriff, the governor is calling for patience. Governor Rick Scott said yesterday he'll wait for an FDLE investigation into the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting before he decides what to do about Sheriff Scott Israel. House Committee To Investigate School Shooting (Tallahassee, FL) -- A Lake County lawmaker is leading the call for more answers into the Broward County school shooting. Yalaha State Rep. Larry Metz chairs the Public Integrity and Ethics Committee that announced yesterday it will investigate the shooting. Metz says the committee should have subpoenas ready by tomorrow requesting information from police, sheriff's deputies, Broward County government and the school board. Trial Of Pulse Shooter's Widow Starts This Week (Orlando, FL) -- Jury selection begins Wednesday in the trial of the Pulse nightclub shooter's widow. When testimony begins, the federal judge handling the case says video and audio from police body cameras inside the club, and text messages between Noor Salman and Omar Mateen can be shown in court. Salman is accused of helping her husband in advance of the massacre of 49 victims in 2016.
CareerSource Tampa Bay Board Fires CEO Peachey (Tampa, FL) -- The head of an agency that helped find jobs for the unemployed is now out of at least one job. CareerSource Tampa Bay's board yesterday voted to fire CEO Ed Peachey over claims that he inflated the number of people his agency found jobs for. Peachey will get severance, which led member Sandy Murman to vote against Peachey's firing. Peachey is still CEO of CareerSource Pinellas, but that could change tomorrow when the board is likely to fire him.
Teenager Arrested After Explosion At School (Orlando, FL) -- A 14-year-old was arrested after an explosion at his school Saturday. Students and staff were at Timber Creek High School in Orlando for a debate tournament, when there was a loud boom and smoke was seen coming from a restroom. Nobody was hurt, but everyone had to be evacuated while police searched the building. There's no word on how the student could be connected to the blast. WHO KNEW DEBATE TEAMS WERE THAT COMPETATIVE?
