95 Killed In Suicide Car Bombing in Afghanistan

A suicide bomber driving an ambulance filled with explosives detonated in the heart of the Afghan capital of Kabul on Saturday, killing 95 people and wounding another 158 Afghanistan, officials said.

The attacker drove the ambulance through a security checkpoint after telling security officials he was taking a patient to a nearby hospital Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi told CNN. Police identified the attacker at a second security checkpoint, but were unable to prevent him from detonating the explosives near a large hospital and several diplomatic buildings at around 12:45 p.m. local time.

The attack comes in an area that is generally considered one of the safest in the city, and is likely to fuel doubts about the Afghan government's ability to keep people safe.

Officials say they expect the death toll to rise.
