Orange County Sheriff Considering Mayoral Run
(Orange Co., FL) -- Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings is considering a run for Orange County mayor. Demings made the announcement yesterday that he is interested in succeeding incumbent Mayor Teresa Jacobs, who is term-limited in 2018. Demings has led the Orange County Sheriff's Office since 2008. He is married to Orlando-area Democratic Congresswoman and former cop Val Demings. Given what we’ve seen out of his wife, no thank you!
Prosecutor Defends Decision Not To Seek Death Penalty
(Tampa, FL) -- A woman's murder could bring the death penalty, but the prosecutor is explaining why he's not choosing that option. Antwoine Noland is charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death last summer of Alicia Fussell in Tampa. State's Attorney Andrew Warren has decided not to pursue the death penalty, but he has pursued that option in other cases. His spokesman tells Fox-13 Warren will only push for the death penalty in the most atrocious and heinous cases, and the Noland case is not one of those cases. I wonder if the governor will replace him on this case, then?
Economist Questions Economic Impact Report On Pier District
(St. Petersburg, FL) -- A claim about how much money the new pier district could bring to St. Pete might not hold water. St. Petersburg's economic impact report released this week on the project estimates it will bring in 80-million dollars a year. An economist who looked at the report, though, says it overestimates how many people will book an extra night at a hotel because of the pier. Dr. Victor Matheson also tells 10News the pier likely won't create new spending but will just take spending away from other areas. The game plan of the economic development and tourism types has been discovered…and folks are speaking out. It’s about time!
