INTERVIEW: Why DNCE's New Album Is Joe Jonas’ Favorite Body Of Work

In a year of consistent promo, high-profile performances and success of their very first Billboard Top 10 hit, "Cake by the Ocean," DNCE is living and breathing proof that hard work pays off. Today culminates all those long days (and nights) with the release of their self-titled debut LP, a quirky 14-song set that finds Joe Jonas, Jack Lawless, JinJoo Lee, Cole Whittle offering up a playlist better suited for the bar than during your next car ride with the family.

Two days before the release of the album, Joe and the remainder of the quirky pop foursome took to iHeartRadio HQ for an exclusive Q&A interview about the collection as well as their upcoming shows as part of our iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour. Take a look below!

Congratulations on the upcoming release. Does feel just as exciting or more than the release of SWAAY?

Joe Jonas: I think it feels more exciting. Getting the EP out to the world was exciting enough, but now it's been like a year since we've released any new music and it's finally ready. It's two days away, so we just are ready for everyone to hear it.

With the iTunes snippets up, fans are listening to the bits and everything. "Naked" is getting a lot of good buzz. How did that one come about?

Cole Whittle: Well, when we were born, we were naked. That inspired us years and years later to write a cool song about, you know, partying with your friends and girlfriends and boyfriends and getting naked. It's a classic DNCE house party song.

Kent Jones is the sole feature on the album. Have you guys worked with him before or previously crossed paths?

Joe Jonas: We've been fans of Kent Jones for a while. To have him on this album is exciting because we love the stuff he's coming out with. We reached out and he was quick to respond and he put a great rap on it. It's funny because he sings most of the time and his rap was awesome. We're looking forward to get him on stage at one of our shows and do the song.

What happens when you guys sit down to write a song. Do you have a particular way of going about the songwriting process?

Cole Whittle: It's always different when we write a song. Its kind of how we hang out. Sometimes me and Joe won't shut up. Sometimes we just chill and JinJoo won't shut up and then Jack never shuts up. It's always different. It can start from a little musical idea or just a funny poetic line or just an image in our heads and we just always run from there. It's always different which I think is a good thing.

Joe, as somebody that had some creative limitations when you were younger, to now having essentially full creative control, how does that feel and how did you feel like you made that transition?

Joe Jonas: Yeah, I think the biggest difference is probably just my age. Writing music when you're a little bit older, you're going through different things that you went through when you were younger. I'm proud of the stuff I did with my brothers, but I feel like this is definitely some of our favorite bodies of work that we've all created and we're able to release to the world and say, "This is who we are now and this is what DNCE is." We can't wait for everyone to hear it.

You'll also be on our Jingle Ball Tour later this year. What do you think the best thing is about these collective radio shows when you're with all these other acts?

Cole Whittle: I think the bottom line is, we're musicians but we love music more than anything. To be able to walk down the hallway and see people we listen to in our own personal lives or when we're riding through the airport in the van or whatever. Just being able to hang out and see what other people do and how they enjoy the experience. We have an open-door policy in our dressing room, so we always have strobe lights and music blasting and everyone is welcome.

Are you able to see the sets after your set or do you just chill out in the room and see who comes by?

Cole Whittle: It's always different. We try to hang as much as we possibly can but if we have to be in Europe in 10 minutes we have to leave.

2016 is coming to an end and you guys have accomplished a lot this year. What are you looking forward to in 2017?

Joe Jonas: We just hope that the same thing happens all over again for us. We came together as a band summertime last year. Like you said, it's been a full year for us, crazy year. We just want more of the same and now that the album's out we want to be able to just tour and tour and tour and tour.

DNCE is currently available for download.
