Daytona's Checkered Flag Crosswalk To Be Painted Over
(Daytona Beach, FL)-- Daytona Beach is the target of Florida's new law banning colorful street art. The Daytona International Speedway is told it must remove its checkered-flag crosswalks to meet new state standards. The crosswalks are among several hundred across the state that have been flagged for removal.
FAA Holds Meeting In Brevard County To Discuss Starship Program
(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- The FAA held a public meeting yesterday at the Kennedy Space Center to discuss the Starship program. SpaceX wants to conduct dozens of Starship launches from Cape Canaveral, and some residents attended the meeting to share their concerns. Those running the meeting, though, didn't offer residents a chance to speak. One man tells Fox 35 it seems like we're going to be told what's happening rather than having any type of influence upon it. Another meeting is set for tomorrow in Cape Canaveral at the Radisson Conference Center on Astronaut Boulevard.
Visit Orlando Accused Of Misspending $20M
(Orlando, FL) -- Visit Orlando is accused of misspending millions of dollars. Orange County Assistant Comptroller Wendy Kittleson shared her findings with the county commission yesterday. A review found the tourism agency misspent almost 20 million dollars over the last six years. Visit Orlando President and CEO Casandra Matej [[muh-TAY]] says this information is new to her, and it wasn't in an audit the county released last month. County commissioners asked Visit Orlando to investigate and report back to them in December.
Quincy City Clerk Arrested
(Quincy, FL) -- A public official is facing criminal charges in Gadsden County. Quincy City Clerk Janice Shackelford was arrested yesterday for fraud, grand theft, forgery and misuse of public office. The state attorney's office says she sold cemetery plots for cash and printed fake documents to conceal her actions. Shackelford allegedly made 7-thousand dollars doing this. There's no word on how long it may have gone on, but prosecutors say they have been investigating her for months. Shackelford is due in court today. She has been city clerk for five years. The city commission voted to suspend her without pay yesterday. Joann Kimble was named interim city clerk.
More Broward County Public Schools Could Close
(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- More schools could be closing in Broward County. The school board met yesterday and discussed 34 schools where enrollment is down over eight-thousand students this year. Three are high schools. The others are either middle schools or elementary schools. No decisions were made, but board member Allen Zeman says some closings are inevitable. Not everyone is convinced, though. Board member Maura Bulman says closing schools should be a last option.
Trump Wishes Luck To Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce After Engagement Announcement
(Washington, DC)-- President Trump is commenting on the engagement of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. He was asked about it during his cabinet meeting Tuesday, and at first said he wishes them "a lot of luck," which was met immediately with laughter in the room. Trump has been a sharp critic of Swift after she endorsed Kamala Harris for president. Trump added Kelce is a great player and Swift is a "terrific person."
