DeSantis Cuts Budget Items For Central Florida
(Tallahassee, FL) -- The governor's vetoes will affect projects in Central Florida. Governor Ron DeSantis signed the FY 2025-26 budget yesterday. He did so after vetoing over half-a-billion dollars in spending. The cuts include about 10-million dollars for Brevard County, including 5-million for West Shore Junior-Senior High School. He also cut 7-and-a-half million dollars for the Wedgefield Water and Wastewater system in Orange County. He also cut 200-thousand dollars for an organization that tries to help the homeless. In Volusia County, he vetoed spending on public safety training centers in Daytona Beach and Oviedo. In Osceola County, DeSantis eliminated 500-thousand dollars for stormwater improvements in Kissimmee. Overall, the budget includes more than 117-billion dollars in spending.
Immigration Advocates Ask FIFA To Protect Attendees From ICE
(Coral Gables, FL)-- Immigrant-rights advocates are asking soccer's world governing body to protect fans from ICE. A rally was held yesterday in Miami-Dade County outside FIFA's offices in Coral Gables. Those attending want FIFA to ensure fans can safely attend games without having to worry about being questioned about their immigration status. Thomas Kennedy is with the Florida Immigrant Coalition, and he says ICE agents have been at Club World Cup soccer matches. He adds he didn't see any acts of intimidation, but there are still concerns. Laura Munoz is with the Florida Student Power Network. She says soccer has the power to bring us together, and that's what we need the most right now.
Kissimmee City Council To Vote On Alcohol Restrictions
(Kissimmee, FL)-- An upcoming vote could affect nightlife in Osceola County. The Kissimmee City Council is expected to vote today on restricting alcohol sales downtown. A proposed ordinance calls for stopping alcohol sales at midnight unless a business has a special permit. The city says the goal is to preserve public safety. Mayor Jackie Espinosa says we have to do what's right for the greater good of our community, but some business owners think it's the wrong approach. One bar owner tells Channel 9 the new law is not necessary and a sign of too much bureaucracy.
Disney Cruise Ship Docks At Port Everglades After Rescue At Sea
(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- A cruise ship is docked in Broward County, Florida after a dramatic rescue at sea. The Disney Dream arrived at Port Everglades yesterday after a trip to the Caribbean. On Sunday, a girl fell overboard from the fourth deck, and her father jumped in to save her. Crew members sprang into action and rescued them. One passenger says watching the ordeal left her crying like a baby, and she says the dad is a hero. Another passenger says the scene took everyone's breath away.
