Sheriff Lopez' Estranged Wife Arrested
(Kissimmee, FL) --Sheriff Marcos Lopez' estranged wife is now also facing criminal charges. Homeland Security agents from Tampa arrested Robin Severance Lopez yesterday. She's the estranged wife of Marcos Lopez. He was sheriff of Osceola County before his arrest and suspension this month. Both are facing racketeering charges. Both are also being held in the Lake County jail. Ms. Lopez is due in court today. The couple and four others are accused of running an illegal gambling operation that generated over 20 million dollars in profits. One of the suspects remains on the loose, and WESH 2 reports she may have left the country.
Florida AG Announces "Alligator Alcatraz"
(Miami, FL) -- A new facility for illegal immigrants could be coming to Miami-Dade County. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced yesterday the federal government has approved funding to build a detention center in the Everglades. Uthmeier refers to it as Alligator Alcatraz. He says it could open as soon as next month at the Miami-Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. Uthmeier says the land off Tamiami Trail is virtually abandoned. Work appears to have already started even though the state has yet to buy the land from Miami-Dade and Collier counties. The state is offering 20 million dollars. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava wants a detailed environmental impact analysis and maybe more money. Her office says the land could be worth almost ten times what the state is offering.
Seventh Execution Set For Tuesday
(Tallahassee, FL)-- Florida is preparing for another execution. Thomas Gudinas [[goo-DEE-niss]] is scheduled to be put to death on June 24th. He raped and killed a woman in downtown Orlando over 30 years ago. If the execution is carried out, it would mark the seventh one in Florida this year.
Second Shark Bite Reported On Hilton Head Island
(Hilton Head, SC)-- Another shark bite is being reported on South Carolina's Hilton Head Island. The victim, identified as a teenage girl, is recovering after she suffered a leg injury consistent with a shark bite on Sunday afternoon. It came less than a week after a 12-year-old girl was also bitten by a shark.
