DeSantis Signs Aerospace Legislation
(Paris) --Governor Ron DeSantis has signed two pieces of legislation that solidify Florida's position as a global leader in aerospace, transportation, and innovation. During his trade mission in France, the Governor signed Senate bills 1516 and 1662. The first one creates the International Aerospace Innovation Fund, and the second one enacts wide-ranging updates across Florida's transportation, seaport, and logistics sectors.
Valencia College To Stop Recruiting International Students
(Orlando, FL) --Some Central Florida schools may wind up with fewer international students. Valencia College announced yesterday it won't recruit foreign students due to uncertainties about student visas. Currently, Valencia College has about 13-hundred students from abroad. That's less than three percent of its student population. A spokesperson for Seminole State College tells the Orlando Sentinel they're also no longer recruiting international students.
Plane Makes Emergency Landing In Escambia County
(Pensacola, FL) --The Navy is investigating after two pilots had to make an emergency landing in Escambia County. Two Navy pilots were on a training flight yesterday when bad weather forced them to land at Pensacola International Airport. During the landing, the plane had some sort of mishap. No details were released. Navy officials tell WEAR News both aviators were taken to local medical facilities as a precaution.
Deadly Deputy-Involved Shooting In Miami-Dade County
(Miami, FL) --A man is dead after he was shot by a deputy in Miami-Dade County. It happened last night in West Little River. The sheriff's office says it all started when the deputy tried to pull over the man for driving with a window that had an illegal tint. The man, though, refused to pull over, and the deputy followed him to the apartment complex. Deputies say that's when the man got out of the car with a gun, and he was shot. No one else was hurt. He has not been identified, but the MDSO says he was in his 20s. The FDLE is investigating.
Panthers Win Stanley Cup
(Sunrise, FL) --Hockey may be Canada's game, but the best team is once again in Florida. The Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-1 last night at Amerant Bank Arena. The Game Six win clinched the Panthers' second straight Stanley Cup. Sam Reinhart had four goals to record the franchise's first playoff hat trick. Sam Bennett won the Conn Smythe trophy for playoff MVP. Four of the last six Stanley Cups have been won by Florida teams, with Tampa Bay winning in 2020 and '21. Every Stanley Cup Finals since 2020 has included either the Lightning or Panthers. The Panthers are already one of the favorites to win the Cup next season. ESPN Bet has Florida, Edmonton and Colorado as co-favorites.
CA Seven Charged With Largest U.S. Jewelry Heist
(Santa Ana, CA) --Seven men from Los Angeles are being charged in connection with the largest jewelry heist in U.S. history. The U.S. Attorney's Office for California's Central District says the defendants are accused of stealing about 100-million-dollars worth gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and luxury watches from an armored car in July of 2022. They were indicted last week on two counts of theft from an interstate shipment and conspiracy to commit theft.
Police Find Second Instrument Stolen from Rock Band Heart
(Atlantic City, NJ) -- Police in Atlantic City have recovered the second of two instruments that were stolen from the Hall of Fame rock group Heart earlier this month. Police say detectives found the vintage 1966 Gibson Mandolin after they received information about who may have had it. The person surrendered the mandolin to police without incident. Band member Paul Moak has played the mandolin for more than 25 years. A second instrument, a custom-made Telecaster, was recovered last week. They were stolen when Heart played a concert at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino's Etess Arena.
