Trump Supports DeSantis' Special Session On Immigration

(Tallahassee, FL) -- President-elect Donald Trump is supporting the idea of launching a special legislative session in Florida to address immigration. Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social saying he hopes other governors will follow Ron DeSantis' lead. DeSantis called on state lawmakers to get together in Tallahassee on the week of January 27th to prepare for the Trump Administration's deportation program. He also wants legislators to talk about other issues, including disaster relief, support for the agricultural industry, and condo regulations. Meanwhile, state Senate and House leaders believe they should wait until the regular session on March 4th.

Proposal Wants To Keep Florida Manatees On Threatened Species List

(Tallahassee, FL) -- A federal proposal is trying to keep Florida manatees on the threatened species list.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service introduced a measure saying Florida manatees face threats from boats, habitat loss, and coastal development, but especially the loss of warm-water refuges. Environmentalists have spent decades arguing that the marine mammals should be reclassified as endangered in order for them to receive more protections. State wildlife officials say 565 manatees died last year. A 60-day public comment period for the proposal is underway.

Suspect In Deadly Kidnapping To Plead Guilty

(Sanford, FL) -- A suspect in a deadly kidnapping may be able to avoid the death penalty. Kevin Ocasio-Justiniano is expected to plead guilty today in federal court to his role in a deadly kidnapping in Seminole County. A group of suspects allegedly carjacked Miami-Dade County's Katherine Aguasviva in Winter Springs nine months ago, kidnapped her, robbed her and killed her.Her body was found in a burned car in Osceola County. By pleading guilty, Ocasio-Justiniano will get life in prison instead of the death penalty.   

United Flight Hits Coyote During Takeoff At O'Hare

(Chicago, IL) -- A coyote is being blamed for forcing a flight to return to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Officials say a United Airlines flight from the Windy City to Phoenix had to return to O'Hare Sunday morning after its landing gear hit a coyote during takeoff. Another plane took the passengers to their destination later that afternoon. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

National Archives Looking For Volunteers To Transcribe Cursive Documents

(Washington, DC) -- The National Archives is looking for volunteers to help transcribe historic documents ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary. The archive has documents dating back to the Revolutionary War that are written in cursive and need to be transcribed. Documents include pension records, immigration materials and other historic items. 2009, in what was quickly dubbed "Miracle on the Hudson," the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 crash-landed the plane into the freezing waters of the Hudson River near midtown Manhattan after the plane sustained major engine failure shortly after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport. Pilot Chesley Sullenberger of Danville, California, an air force veteran, was hailed as a hero for putting the jet down at 165 miles an hour.
