Florida Approves Funds For Businesses Hurt By Idalia
(Tallahassee, FL)-- More Florida businesses impacted by Hurricane Idalia [[ ee-DAL-ya ]] are getting help from the state. Governor Ron DeSantis announced that nearly six-and-a-half-million dollars is being awarded to 161 businesses under the state's Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan program. It provides short-term zero-interest loans to businesses. Twenty-million dollars is available through the program and five-million has been set aside for agriculture and aquaculture small businesses.Applications are being accepted until October 25th or until the money runs out.
Volusia County Teen Charged With Manslaughter After Overdose Death
(DeLand, FL)-- A recent arrest in Volusia County proves fentanyl is everywhere.That's what Sheriff Mike Chitwood said yesterday after a teenager was arrested Friday in DeLand for manslaughter.Seventeen-year-old Daniel Arvizo allegedly sold a deadly dose of fentanyl to a 17-year-old classmate over three months ago. Arvizo is being held at the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center. The state attorney tells News 6 they may charge him as an adult.
Child Hospitalized After Getting Struck By Lightning In Brevard County
(Orlando, FL)-- Help and prayers are pouring in for a girl struck by lightning in Brevard County. Minnesota's Mila Yang was in at Sebastian Inlet Beach with her family to celebrate her 12th birthday in August when she and her mom were hit. Mom is OK, but Mila remains in an Orlando ICU with brain damage. Over 700 people have donated over 40-thousand dollars to a GoFundMe page. According to an update on the website last week, Mila has received an outpouring of support from around the country, and it has warmed her mom's heart very much as she navigates her new life with her daughter.
New College Of Florida To Choose New President
(Sarasota, FL)-- New College of Florida is expected to choose a new leader today.The school's board of trustees is scheduled to meet in Sarasota to vote on a new president. The three finalists are Interim President Richard Corcoran, UCF Associate Professor Tyler Fisher and former University of Mount Union interim president Robert Gervasi. Today's meeting starts at 2:00, and it'll be streamed on the college's YouTube channel.
NHTSA Recalls 3.3-Million Hyundais, Kias
(Undated) -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is recalling more than three-million Hyundai and Kia models. NHTSA [[ NIT-sa ]] issued recalls last week for more than one-point-seven million Kias and one-point-six million Hyundais because of issues that could start a fire. Hyundai is the parent company of Kia and the biggest automaker in South Korea. The recalls cover 13 Hyundai and 12 Kia models built between 2010 and 2019.
NFL Changes Time Of Bucs-Lions Game
(Tampa, FL)-- The Buccaneers are apparently becoming a big draw. Tampa Bay was scheduled to host the Detroit Lions October 15th at 1:00 p.m., but the NFL yesterday moved it to a 4:25 p.m. kickoff.The change will allow Fox to broadcast the game to a bigger audience. Both teams are 3-and-one and in first place in their divisions. Those tuning in will get to see the Bucs' old creamsicle uniforms, including the helmets with the Bucco Bruce logo. Also, Raymond James Stadium will be made to look like Tampa Stadium, or The Big Sombrero, with retro field stencils and stadium bunting.
First Humanoid Robot Factory To Open In Salem, Mass.
(Salem, MA)-- The world's largest humanoid robot factory will be built in Salem, Massachusetts. Agility Robotics is known for creating the bipedal robot known as Digit. The human-centric, multi-purpose robot is designed to work safely in warehouses and distribution centers. The company says it hopes the factory will be able to produce more than ten-thousand robots annually. Agility Robotics says the 70 thousand square feet factory will open later this year.
