Salons In Brevard County Glad To Welcome Customers Back

(Titusville, FL) -- Even with what one owner calls big-time changes, salons in Brevard County are happy to be open. Barbershops and salons were allowed to reopen yesterday in most of the state, but they must follow restrictions like wearing masks and only seeing customers who make appointments. A Cocoa Village salon owner tells Florida Today it was a wonderful feeling to see customers again.

Plans Continue For Hurricane Season During Pandemic

(Tallahassee, FL) -- With an active hurricane season starting soon, Florida emergency management officials are continuing to consider how to handle things during the pandemic. The state Division of Emergency Management Director is developing plans about how to handle evacuations and shelters, while also adding millions of face masks to the state's stockpile of storm supplies. Officials are also looking at possibly separating people in shelters based on temperature checks.

Lawyer Wants Review Of Teen's Shooting Death

(Sanford, FL) -- The lawyer who defended George Zimmerman is now looking into the deadly shooting of a black teenager in Seminole County. Mark O'Mara wants a grand jury to review the shooting that killed 17-year-old Adrein Green last week in Sanford. Police say the shooting was justified because Green was trying to break into a car at the time the owner shot him. O'Mara, though, who represents Green's family, tells the Orlando Sentinel the owner was inside his home and not in danger.

Missing Jacksonville Boy Found

(Jacksonville, FL) -- There's good news in the search for a missing Jacksonville boy. The JSO announced this morning that Moncrief 11-year-old Keavon Washington was found safe. He had been missing since Saturday night. The JSO has said his biological parents, who do not have custody of him, are persons of interest, and the investigation is ongoing.  

St. Augustine Cancels July Fourth Fireworks

(St. Augustine, FL) -- A summer tradition in St. Johns County is off because of the coronavirus. The St. Augustine City Commission voted yesterday to cancel the July Fourth fireworks show. The annual event usually attracts thousands. The show may be held at a later date.

Disney World Accepting Reservations Beginning July 1st

(Orlando, FL) -- No date has been announced for reopening Disney World, but reservations will be accepted starting in July. Disney has been closed since mid-march. Disney Springs, an outdoor venue, will reopen next week. Custodians have been called back to begin sanitizing there. 

California Inmates Tried To Infect Themselves with COVID-19

(Castaic, CA) -- Inmates at a California prison are trying to infect themselves with COVID-19. Sheriff Alex Villanueva says security camera footage showed inmates at North County Correctional Facility drinking from the same cup and inhaling out of a shared mask. 21 of the prisoners tested positive for coronavirus. Villanueva says it's troubling that people would infect themselves in an attempt to be released. 

Federal Judge Approves Strip Clubs' Entitlement To PPP Aid

(Detroit, MI) -- A federal judge in Michigan has ruled that strip clubs should receive aid from the federal Paycheck Protection Program. District Judge Matthew Leitman issued a preliminary injunction saying that the Small Business Administration could not stop businesses involved in sexually oriented live performances and products from getting emergency PPP loans. Leitman argued that the legislation is no ordinary program, so Congress could not pick winners and losers for financial aid. He also ruled that other businesses such as banks, political lobbying firms and private clubs could not be excluded either. The judge's decision can be appealed.
